Commemorating the 2563th Buddha Day--Shaolin Temple Holds the Buddha Bathing Day Dharma Assembly Successfully in Jihai Year

On May 12, 2019, the 8th day of the fourth lunar month in Jihai Year was the Buddha Day. To commemorate the 2563th Buddha Day, Shaolin Temple, the ancestral monastery of Chan sect, grandly held the Buddha Bathing Day dharma assembly, with merits and virtues to pray for world peace, good weather for the crops, prosperity and permanence of Buddhist dharma. The great monk Yongxin, abbot of Shaolin Temple, burned incense and presided over the dharma assembly. Shaolin monks, monks from subsidiaries of Shaolin Temple as well as believers of ten directions and others, around several thousand people, participated in the event with delighted, obtaining dharma joy and spare the Buddha’s kindness together.




According to records, in 623 BC, Sakyamuni was born. The same day was the 8th day of the fourth lunar month. From then on, the 8th day of the fourth lunar month each year, Buddhist monatics will hold the Buddha Bathing Day to express sentient beings’ celebration of the birth of Buddha and demand as well as worship for Buddha dharma. People vow to learn Buddhist dharma, pray for peace and luckiness and hold the free life dharma assembly the same day, promoting preserving and protecting life to lead believers to cultivate compassion, have gratitude and improve enlightenment.










At 9:30am, with a gentle and pleasant breeze and shining Buddhist light in China Songshan Shaolin Temple, Shaolin monks, Shaolin overseas disciples and Shaolin lay Buddhists lined up to the Abbot Hall to invite the figure of Sakyamuni prince. Sweet petals cleared the way and ceremonial canopies were solemn. Abbot Shi Yongxin protected the crystal figure of Sakyamuni prince to the Mahaviro Hall. As Buddhist chants curled up, the copper basin was put among flowers. The water full of fragrance in the basin was a mixture of white sandalwood, red sandalwood, curcuma aromatica, borneol, agilawood, musk, clove and so on. Abbot Yongxin put the crystal figure of prince into the basin. The prince used one hand to point the sky and another one to point to the ground, with the solemn appearance.














In the Mahaviro Hall, Abbot Yongxin burned incense and offered sacrifice to Buddha, singing praise to Buddha, chanting sutra, consecrating and circumambulating Buddha and singing Buddhist verse of the Buddha Bathing Day. In the end of the dharma assembly completed successfully, Abbot Yongxin bailed up water to bath Buddha with a wooden spoon. Then Shaolin monks, Shaolin overseas disciples as well as believers of ten directions bathed Buddha with water in turn to remove the dirt and cleanse soul, which made body and mind purified and attained endless merits and virtues.




During the event, Shaolin Temple held the free life ceremony. Monk Yongfu offered incense and water purification and led Shaolin monks as well as protectors and lay Buddhists to explain Bddham Saranam Gacchami (Chinese: 三皈依法), recite the Great Compassion Mantra and Mantra of Rebirth in Pureland blessed and pray that sentient beings releasing captive animals would be able to escape from the three hells forever.






























On that day, subsidiaries of Shaolin Temple--Xiaozai Temple in Feng county, Shaanxi Province, Longhua Temple in Xuchang, Puzhao Temple in Luohe, Miaoyan Chan Temple in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, Panshan Northern Shaolin Temple in Tianji, Zhougu Temple in Xingyang, Ciyun Temple in Gongyi, Yueshan Temple in Jiaozuo, Lefo Temple in Beijing, Qingfeng Puzhao Temple in PuYang and other temples as well as overseas Shaolin cultural centers held the solemn Buddha Bathing Day and the free life dharma assembly. With Buddhist recital of scriptures, local believers, together with all masters bathed Buddha and released captive animals. The scene was solemn.
