In 495 A.D., during the southern and northern Dynasties (420-389 A.D.), Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei Dynasty built Shaolin Temple to house the Indian monk Bhadra. In 587 A.D., another Indian monk Bodhidharma, who came from the direct line of teachings of Shakyamuni, faced a wall in solitude meditation in Shaolin Temple for nine years. He initiated Chan Buddism, and Shaolin Temple became the ancestral monastery of the Chan sect. Therefore, Shaolin Temple made great contributions to the sinofication of Buddhism, as well as the founding and development of the Chinese Patriarchal Chan tradition. (From Shaolin Temple in My Heart)
